The Federal Councils bring together the senior officials from all federal departments and agencies in each province and territory to coordinate activities and share information. Each of the 13 Federal Councils is led by a Chair or Co-Chairs and supported by a small full-time secretariat.
In the provinces, secretariat services are provided by the economic development agencies. In the territories, INAC is the host service provider for the Council secretariat positions. Funding is provided from Treasury Board through the Annual Reference Level Update and through departmental membership levies. Moving the secretariat host supports to the new Agency will make the northern Federal Councils consistent with the other Councils across Canada.
