CanNor-10-024
Whitehorse, (Yukon), July 21, 2010 – An international Circumpolar Statistics Workshop received investments today from the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) and the Government of Yukon (YG) to examine methodologies for data collection and reporting.
The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and the Honourable Dennis Fentie, Premier of Yukon today announced the Yukon Bureau of Statistics will use the joint investment of $27,500 from CanNor and $20,000 from YG to organize and host the Circumpolar Statistics Workshop.
“Having access to accurate demographic and labour market statistics are instrumental in ensuring that the North has the data required to support sustainable and diversified economic development. These statistics allow Northerners to have a first hand account of economic progress being made in their communities,” said Minister Strahl, who is also Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor of Métis and Non-Status Indians.
“Sharing knowledge, comparing techniques and methodologies, and networking among leading experts will provide ongoing benefits across the North,” said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister Responsible for the North and Minister of Health.
“This international workshop is a good opportunity for leading experts on northern labour and demographics statistics to meet and exchange information on best practices and current conditions in northern communities,” said Yukon Premier Dennis Fentie.
The three-day international event, taking place in Whitehorse from October 13-15, 2010, will bring together specialists from across northern Canada, Alaska and Greenland. They will share their knowledge, best practices, and models for interpreting northern demographics and labour market statistics.
Federal investment for this project is made possible through CanNor’s Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.
SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor, which is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada’s economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
