Government of Canada funding:
$160,000 Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund
$80,000 Gas Tax Fund

Government of Yukon funding:
$160,000 Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund

City of Whitehorse:
$80,000

The Government of Canada, through the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), the Government of Yukon and the City of Whitehorse are investing a total of $480,000 in the Waste Heat Recovery Project to improve the Whitehorse Canada Games Centre’s overall energy efficiency system.

The Governments of Canada and Yukon will each contribute $160,000 under the Canada-Yukon Municipal-Rural Infrastructure Program, with the City of Whitehorse contributing $80,000 and an additional $80,000 is being contributed under the federal Gas Tax Fund.

The project will include updating energy audits, expanding the ice plant waste heat recovery system, installing a new heat recovery system and variable speed drives for the pool air handling equipment. This project will reduce the Canada Games Centre’s diesel fuel consumption by up to 30,000 litres per year and reduce power consumption by up to 200,000 kwh per year, plus will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help the City potentially realize $55,000 annually in savings.

The Canada-Yukon Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF) is a federal-territorial funding program created to help address the infrastructure needs of urban and rural areas. The program began in 2005 and will run until 2011-12. It helps Yukon municipalities and their residents ensure they have access to the same quality of public infrastructure as communities in the rest of Canada.
