Backgrounder - CanNor Sends Northern Youth to Ottawa

The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency will invest $165,273.36 over two years ($87,406.68 in 2009/2010 and $77,866.68 in 2010/2011) in Canada’s Northern youth by providing funding to Global Vision for the Junior Team Canada Pan-Territorial Northern Project.

The Junior Team Canada Pan-Territorial Northern Project has three phases:

  1. Pan-Territorial Global Leaders Centres (GLC), Iqaluit, Nunavut (April 27-29) and Yellowknife, NWT (May 2-4)
    • Up to 60 youth between the ages of 16 and 24 from Northern Canada, chosen based on a Global Vision Application process, will participate in interactive workshops and presentations by business, government and education leaders to educate youth about the role that trade and economic development play in Canada’s ability to compete in today’s global economy.

  2. The National G8 Youth Caucus, Ottawa, ON (May 15-19)
    • Six youth from Northern Canada will be selected from the Pan-Territorial GLC to participate at the National Youth G8 Caucus.
    • During the four-day Caucus, 100 youth from across Canada will have the opportunity to meet with business, industry and government leaders and attend forums on G8 issues.

  3. The Muskoka Youth G8 Summit (MY G8), Huntsville, ON (June 23-25)
    • Each Territory will select one delegate from the Pan-Territorial GLC to attend the MY G8, which will be attended by youth from around the world.

Youth that participate in the program will learn more about key growth sectors in Northern Canada and how to promote them on the world stage.

Global Vision, founded in 1991, is registered as a national not-for-profit organization that partners with government, business and education leaders to train and educate Canada’s young leaders to become active global citizens in today’s global economy.

The investment for this project was made possible through the Targeted Investment Program, delivered through CanNor’s Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in the three territories.

SINED is part of a suite of economic development programs within CanNor, which is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada’s economic development activities in the territories, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
