Backgrounder - Support for Whitehorse Trail Infrastructure

The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, on behalf of the Government of Canada, will provide a total of $125,000 to the City of Whitehorse to help refurbish its network of non-motorized trails.

Whitehorse is home to over 800 kilometres of trails, tourism assets which are consistent with its brand positioning as the Wilderness City. These trails, while used extensively by residents and tourists, are in need of improvement.

This project will stimulate and diversify Yukon’s tourism industry. By concentrating these efforts near the city’s commercial area, it will attract more visitors to local businesses.

CanNor’s funding will enable the City of Whitehorse to develop and refurbish a network of non-motorized wilderness trails near the city’s commercial district. These improvements will:

  • Increase the quality of trail routes
  • Improve trail signage
  • Decommission unsafe routes
  • Establish key trailheads, including motorised vehicle barriers and information kiosks

This project will provide 24 person-months of seasonal employment for local residents.
