Backgrounder - Canada Supports Partnering for Success

The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), on behalf of the Government of Canada, will provide Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce (WCOC) with $144,600 to support the Partnering for Success project.

Partnering for Success is a private sector-led initiative which aims to foster economic growth, dialogue and cooperation within Yukon. Its steering committee includes representatives from the mining sector, tourism, retail, manufacturing, utilities and transportation as well as the Council of Yukon First Nations, the Municipality of Whitehorse, and the Yukon College. CanNor and the Government of Yukon sit on the committee as ex-officio members.

Over the past two years, Partnering for Success has facilitated a number of sector-specific meetings to identify issues and opportunities related to economic development and the growth of Yukon’s private sector.  In 2009, it hosted its first Economic Summit.

This two-part announcement supports the following activities:
  • A total $104,100 will enable the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce to continue to identify the business communities’ views on barriers to and opportunities for economic development of the Yukon economy. This funding will also be used to conduct detailed analysis of those economic barriers and opportunities and their potential impact. Where possible, recommendations will be developed and prioritized.

  • A further of $40,500 will help stage the upcoming Partnering for Success Economic Summit 2010 (Whitehorse, Yukon, March 25 and 26). This is the second annual summit, which brings the business community together with key stakeholders to discuss ways to strengthen the Yukon economy. The theme of this year’s summit is: The Four Pillars and Recommendations for Moving Economic Growth Forward. The symposium will be informed by previous work of various sector groups under the Partnering for Success umbrella.

Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development

Support for this initiative is being provided through Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) Program, made possible through Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Program is delivered by CanNor in the three territories.

CanNor is a newly established agency responsible for coordinating and delivering federal economic development activities in the North.
